In this project, our group has been carried out an activity focusing on speaking and listening. In order to do that, we have done some internet research to find video clip as an authentic material. We chose the video clip as an authentic material because we think that students might be more attracted to the authentic thing in the teaching and learning process. While searching the materials, we found out that there were so many video clips related to the topic we have chosen. On the other hand, those videos were using British accent and we think that students might encounter obstacles to understand the video. After two meetings, we have decided to change the material to the other thing. The reason we did this because we thing the major focus here were the listening and speaking itself to aware the students about the different type of discourse in the speaking. So we just pull out some simple idea to attract the students.
We did some brainstorming idea at the early meeting to ensure the successful completion of this project. Then we chose the best to be the part of the project. I myself personally put a hundred percent effort in preparing the script of a conversation for the teaching aid in this project. While in the meeting, I am not denying that my group members usually brought some brilliant ideas to share.
Talking about awareness focusing on the Language Awareness, I feel that this project helped in increasing awareness of language. Our project is based on speaking and listening activities are designed to gain awareness that speaking and listening is a key element in a language other than writing. So we bring the conversation as an example speaking activity. People maintain their sense of reality by using conversation. Conversation reassures us that the world is still there, and that we are still in it in our usual proper place. This has helped us in generating towards Language Awareness.
For me, this assignment gives experience and helping in the preparation to be a good language teacher. The experience allowed me to see the ways of taking speaking as an important element in the language teaching to prepare the students facing the real world. Berger and Luckman (1966), argue that “… conversation is the most important means by which people maintain their sense of reality. This is not done by explicitly discussing the nature of the world, but rather “it takes place against the background of a world that is silently taken for granted.” By doing speaking activities in the classroom, we as teachers can help students more aware of the importance of English in daily life conversation. In fact, based on the Malaysian context, we also help students to change from just relying on the writing to speaking. Overall, I feel that this project is helping in creating awareness towards the importance of balancing the use of speaking and listening; reading and writing activities in class. The main thing is using it in the right way with the awareness.
